Dear Macbeth,
It has come to my attention that you are considering a path—killing Duncan—that may appear entirely beneficial to you. However, I am here to convince you otherwise. Your wife’s motives are unreliable; she is driven by her own greed and desires. The act of killing Duncan will not be as glamorous as she has painted it. Her main goal is to become the wife of a king. While she may be persuasive, this decision will primarily benefit Lady Macbeth and only marginally, if at all, you. Are you making this decision for your personal gain, or are you being guided into a choice that will benefit others more than yourself?
I am aware of the prophecies you received from the three witches. I urge you to heed Banquo’s warnings about them. The witches could be deceiving you, leading you to a betrayal. The title of king may seem alluring, but obtaining it through murder will taint the position in many ways. The guilt and fear from this act will consume you, driving you to madness. The visions and hallucinations you have already experienced will worsen, making everything you endure meaningless. It will all be for nothing, and you will be left living a pointless life, dying as a murderer.
I understand the appeal of becoming king and ruling a kingdom. You would be the most powerful person in the land, with everyone working to please you. But consider this: Is the title worth the rules and moral guidelines you would break? Achieving this title honorably would bring you much more pride and satisfaction. When you put hard work and effort into something, the reward is greater and speaks for itself. Living in constant paranoia and fear while trying to care for your people is not an appealing lifestyle for anyone.
As a friend, I hope you make the right decision regarding this matter. Do not let anyone convince you to do something that will cause a lifetime of worry.
